The Value of Molecular Imaging

Unlike x-rays, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging, or ultrasound—which mostly show anatomical pictures—molecular imaging, using positron emission tomography (PET), allows physicians to see how the body is functioning and to measure its chemical and biological processes. This gives them a much greater understanding into a patient’s condition, which, in turn, can enable early detection and/or identification of changes occurring in tissue.

Molecular imaging also:

  • Enables changes in individual patient management in real time (personalized medicine)
  • Facilitates drug development
  • Allows researchers to explore new ways to manage and treat illnesses
